Attachment Styles and Schema Therapy Systematic Review

In this study, the relationship between attachment styles and early maladaptive schemas was examined within the framework of schema therapy using the systematic review method. Turkish studies published between 2015 and 2025 were evaluated within the scope of the study. The literature review was conducted through Google Scholar, DergiPark, and various electronic databases, and a total of nine studies related to attachment styles, schema therapy, and early maladaptive schemas were included in the review. The findings of the examined studies indicated that anxious and avoidant attachment styles were significantly associated with early maladaptive schemas. In particular, abandonment, emotional deprivation, mistrust, social isolation, and defectiveness schemas were found to increase insecure attachment patterns. In addition, variables such as loneliness, anger, romantic relationship beliefs, marital adjustment, and interpersonal relationships were found to be associated with attachment styles and early maladaptive schemas. In line with the findings, schema therapy is considered to be an effective approach in understanding and treating attachment-related problems by contributing to the restructuring of dysfunctional cognitive patterns.
