Objective: This study was conducted to determine the genital hygiene behaviors of women receiving dialysis treatment.
Material and Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in a hospital in eastern Turkey between June 2020 and December 2021. The population of the study consisted of women receiving dialysis treatment in a hospital located in a province in eastern Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 83 women aged 18 and over who came to the dialysis unit for treatment and agreed to participate in the study. The women were sampled with the nonprobability random sampling method and the data were obtained by means of a questionnaire. Number, percentage, mean, standard deviation and chi-square significance test were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Significance was accepted at the p<0.05 level.
Results: The mean age of the women was 49.67±13.63 and the mean Body Mass Index (BMI) was 24.79±3.99. Of the women, 63.9% were married, 80.7% were unemployed, 42.2% had glomerulonephritis due to dialysis, more than half (56.6%) did not use any family planning method, only 24.1% used cotton/combed cotton underwear, 55.4% it was determined that they had a vaginal infection before, 31.3% of them had a current vaginal infection and 37.3% of them had a vaginal douche. Women's employment status (x²=5.793 p=0.017), reason for dialysis (x²=9.957 p=0.041), characteristics of genital discharge (x²=51.249 p=0.001) and previous genital infection status (x²=16.728 p=0.001) Statistically significant difference was found between vaginal infection.
Conclusion: As a result of the study, it was determined that the hygiene habits of women receiving dialysis treatment were insufficient. In particular, it is recommended that nurses working in dialysis units provide training to patients on genital hygiene.
